8) Finding My Style in Watercolor

“What’s my style?” is a perennial question for many early and intermediate painters. And perhaps for watercolor lovers. The simplest answer is that finding one’s artistic style is actually a journey–not a destination! What does that mean? Here’s some thoughts about finding one’s style:

Style Evolves Over Time: Painters should be reassured that style is not something to “find”. Rather, it’s the natural outcome of consistent practice, experimentation and self-discovery over time. Every painting completed is a step closer to one’s unique voice.

• Experimentation is Key: Exploring different ideas, methods and subjects is important. Trying new things will help one discover what appeals and feels authentic. And what does not.

• Draw Inspiration: Looking and analyzing the work of other artists that one admires can be a useful technique—what is it that is appealing? Is it color palette, brushwork, subject matter, use of light, or something else? Try incorporating the appealing aspects in one’s own work.

• Focus On What Feels Natural: Focus on what is exciting while painting. Style often emerges from what one enjoys most! Painting is meant to be enjoyed.

• Patience and Practice: Developing a style takes time and patience. It takes paint and dedication. And it’s normal to feel uncertain and experiment with different approaches for making paintings. Practice is invaluable.

• Celebrate Progress: Be encouraged when looking back at earlier work to see how far one has come in their painting journey. Often, style is emerging, even if one doesn’t recognize it yet.

Ultimately, one’s style is a reflection of who they are as an artist. Typically, it continues to grow and mature as one’s painting journey progresses. Style really isn’t something to chase—it emerges gradually from patient practice, personal preferences, and the way each artist interprets the world they paint. The more one paints, the more one’s unique voice will reveal itself.

So…don’t worry about finding your style. If you paint long enough, your style will find you! So… Sling paint and enjoy! Let you style emerge!
